In first of its kind program, IIT-Bombay has launched M.Tech in education taking stock of the growing need of EdTech professionals in the education industry. The demand of experts in using technology guided by effective pedagogy has grown considerably in recent times.
Earlier in March this year, IIT-Bombay announced admissions for its recently launched master’s program in education technology (ET). The process of short-listing of candidates is under process after which the first batch is expected to commence from the month of July.
Program to Furnish EdTech Experts
The broad objective of this course is to contribute towards meeting the escalated need of qualified ET experts in research labs, schools/colleges, e-learning industries, and training divisions across diverse verticals. The Interdisciplinary Programme in Educational Technology (ET) at IIT-Bombay will get actively involved in research and education in the area of technologies to improve the teaching-learning process.
ET focuses on designing learning environments, leveraging effective pedagogy, and innovative technology, scaffolds for supporting individual and collaborative learning, in formal and informal contexts. The digital natives of today cannot be taught using yesteryears’ methods. The dynamic field of technology offers immense scope of leveraging it for realizing the goals of education.
India’s situation is however grim owing to shortage of technology-adept people in education. The teachers are usually thought to possess no or very less technology efficiency. The coming years will see huge rise in technology-integrated pedagogical innovations for effective learning worldwide, and India with its largest human resource cannot afford to stay behind.

EdTech Companies Commends the Step
This initiative is being looked at as a positive step by the EdTech companies which face dearth of qualified people for the fastest growing multi-billion dollar market in India. Past few years have seen an increase in the number of EdTech start-ups. BYJU (Think & Learn Pvt. Ltd.) founded by Raveendran Byju in 2011 is a Bengaluru based education technology and online tutoring firm which has become the world’s most valued EdTech company at USD 5.4 billion as on March 2019.
Founded in the same year, Embibe and Vedantu are also among the leading EdTech companies. Many more companies are proliferating in this sector, namely EduRev, Toppr, My classboard, CampK12, Planet Spark, etc. This new upcoming sector will certainly require people with new kinds of knowledge, skills and capabilities to deal with the dynamics of technology and learning sciences.
