Nudging Learners With Right Questions, Key to Retention of Learning

Launched in 2018, Quillionz is an AI-powered, online question generator for creating a myriad of instructionally relevant questions within no time. The platform today is being used by over 10,000 members who claim to now save about 60 percent of their time.

Courseware World interviewed Mr. Sandeep Kulkarni, AI Evangelist, Quillionz to know more about their online question generator and how it assists instructors in meeting their learners’ assessment goals.

Excerpts:

Courseware World: Tell us about ‘Quillionz Pro’.  What type of questions can it generate for the teacher/instructor and how many at a time can be created using Quillionz Pro?

Sandeep Kulkarni: In the age of information overload, the key to a successful learning experience lies in asking the right questions. Quillionz does exactly that. Powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, Quillionz is world’s first AI-powered platform that lets teacher/instructors build a host of quality quizzes and assessments within seconds. There is a completely free version for certain common types of questions; and Quillionz Pro which is a premium version at USD 9.99/month. Quillionz Pro generates premium questions such as wh-questions and interpretive questions.

CWW: How many active subscribers does it have?  What is the feedback and satisfaction level of teachers who are using it?

SK: Quillionz was launched in late 2018. It has over 10,000 members using the product regularly since then. Quillionz users are regularly using the product as it saves them over 60 percent of their time in generating question ideas which they can then edit as per their need. They are using the generated questions as reinforcement questions for their students; homework assignments; and more.

Creating new questions regularly on a given content and keeping the learner engaged cannot be done just with the existing questions provided in books or by publisher question bank. Quillionz helps generate variety of questions in a very short time (within seconds).

CWW: How do you think that your AI-powered online question generator ‘Quillionz’ can create a difference in the way assessment and evaluation of learning is done by the educational and training institutes?

SK: Reinforcement is the key for any learner to remember the content for a longer time. Research has proved that a student forgets almost 90 percent of what they learnt within less than a week. The key to remember is to nudge the learner every few days. And one interesting form of nudging is to ask questions. Quillionz helps teachers/instructors and training institutes to fill this need.

Quillionz helps generate variety of questions in a very short time (within seconds). Once the questions are generated, teacher can edit them as per their need and use it in different formats. For example, they can give them as a bunch of flip cards using QuilliQuiz feature of Quillionz; download it in QTI, DOC, or PDF file for offline usage.

CWW: From a teacher’s perspective, how does your product enable them to assess their learners in what they teach? Is there something a teacher need to do after the software generates the questions?

SK: Quillionz uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies to generate questions. It is neutral to content topics. So, one can use any content in English text format and generate questions. What Quillionz generates is a set of question ideas. These question ideas can then be edited by instructor/teacher/subject matter expert as per their need to create final questions. These questions can then be published as QuilliQuiz which presents the question-answers in a flip card self-assessment format. Teacher can share this QuilliQuiz using a web link with their students and other stakeholders.

Creating a good quality question with distractors usually takes 15-20 minutes in a manual mode. What Quillionz helps is to generate anywhere between 50-100 question ideas in just few seconds.

CWW: What is the modus operandi if one wants to generate a variety of questions from a given text on your online question generator? What advantages does it provide over the traditional manual way of creating questions?

SK: Quillionz generates a variety of questions from English text content. For example, it generates MCQs, fill-in-type questions, true/false, describe, explain, and wh-type questions (who, what, when, where, how).

Creating a good quality question with distractors usually takes 15-20 minutes in a manual mode. What Quillionz helps is to generate anywhere between 50-100 question ideas in just few seconds. One can then spend few minutes editing questions of their preference and generate questions. Also, it gives a variety to questions on various parts of the content which otherwise may get ignored in traditional method.

CWW: Does it have features for creating pedagogically relevant what, why and how types questions? Teachers resort to advanced Bloom’s taxonomy while framing questions. To what extent does Quillionz allow adherence to such standards?

SK: As said, Quillionz generates questions of various types such as MCQs, fill-in-type questions, true/false, describe, explain, and wh-type questions. While Quillionz was being conceptualized at Harbinger (www.harbingergroup.com), one of the key function involved in it were instructional designers within the team. That has helped Quillionz to focus its design on questions which are valued by instructional designers, teachers, instructors and subject matter experts.

CWW: Often the AI-generated questions are too mechanical and objective.  How in your opinion can your platform overcome such difficulties?

SK: Assessments have two types of questions: retention-based questions and comprehension-based questions. Retention questions use fill-in-the-blank or “wh” (who, what, when, where, why) formats, while comprehension questions ask learners to reason, draw conclusions or select from multiple choices. When any system is creating questions, expert oversight is required to make sure the questions are good ones. Quillionz provides an easy-to-use interface to review and edit the questions the AI creates.

CWW: E-learning industry is on rise in India with a positive projected CAGR. How do you see the future opportunities for your company amid the changing learning scenario? Share with us your strategies to expand your market and reach.

SK: Organizations around the world spent more than USD 360 billion on training, and this spend has increased every year. It is important that an organization sees a return on such heavy training investments. It’s also important to use assessments – before, during and after training – to ensure that learners are at least understanding and retaining what they learn. Improved knowledge retention and performance are important indicators of effectiveness of training.

AI technology is getting better every day. And Quillionz aims to bring the best of this technology by continuously innovating and updating the product with the aim to make a difference in the life of teachers, instructors, and training institutes.
